Common Names:

Synonyms:

Family:
Callichthyidae

Category:
Catfish_Bottom_Feeders

Distribution:
America - South; Brazil, South America.

Main Ecosystem:
River; River

Temperament:
Schooling; Peaceful. Should be kept in a school with others of the same species or even other Corydoras.

Diet:
Ominvore; They will eat most small foods offered. Live and frozen worms and brine shrimp are relished, though they should be mixed with other foods to ensure a balanced diet.

Care:
These fish are fairly hardy, as with most other Corydoras. Though they can tolerate poor water conditions, they appreciate clean water with some amount of current. High nitrates and sharp gravel have been accused of causing barbel erosion, so both should be avoided. This species tends to be shy, and benefits from cover in the form of plants, driftwood, and other decorations. As these fish are reclusive but social within the species, a minimum of seven per tank is recommended.

pH:
5.7 - 8

Temperature:
22°C - 28°C

72°F - 82°F

Hardness:
2 dH - 25 dH

Potential Size:
Male: 4.5cm (1.8")
Female: 5cm (2")

Water Region:
Bottom; Bottom

Activity:
Diurnal; Diurnal

Gender:
Difficult to determine. Females grow larger and fatter than males.

Breeding:
Not as easy as other Corydoras. Nitrates must be kept as low as possible. Small frequent water changes with slightly cooler water with a pH of 6.5 in a wide, shallow tank often instigates breeding activity.

Variants:
Regional variants of this species are not uncommon. A white color form exists, but it is not an albino mutation as is sometimes thought.

Comments:
Difficult to locate. Sporadic supply ensures a relatively high price compared to other Corydoras. The drab appearance and overlooked status of this species help to keep demand low. Corydoras polystictus is one of the smaller and less-active species, and is not well-publicized.

Main Colours:
Brown, Orange

Markings:
Spots Small

Mouth:
Downturned

Tail:
